Moleskine 2

Posted by Picasa I just get fonder and fonder of this little sketchbook! Downtown Knoxville, sketches from going to and from work on the weekend -- dated Saturday, although it really spans Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Those little squares stamped onto the paper (Friday night) helped break the page up into workable bits for a busy person. * The "bike route" rubber stamp and red postal cancellation is left over from a darker period, one of becoming fascinated more with the art that was being included in some rubber stamp lines than the whole rubber stamping thing itself. I've had the date stamp for years, and have used it on and off in journals when it seems to fit ... there's something satisfying about "whamming" one of those little date stampers!

If you look really closely (or double click the image to enlarge) you'll see places on the left page where the Dr. Ph Martin's watercolors seeped through the paper -- but only on those few places where the paint was worked heavy and wet.

*I was going to draw a grid in ink, then I saw this post by the Mistress of the Moleskine, Amanda of Craftmonkeys fame. She's truly an original and an inspiration -- and if you've never visited her, go now!

Ooooh - you've been out in Knoxville sketching without me!! I love the stamped backgrounds for each little piece of Knox - I may have to borrow that idea from Amanda as well!

And I agree about the date stamper...

Very lovely, Linda. I agree about the date stamper, it makes a very satisfying noise!

This is a really neat idea. YOu stampped the ink color on first then drew in?

Thanks for the plug Linda. I assure you, the inspiration is mutual. I love the limited palette on yours, the stamps, composition.
It looks like the blue background squares are stamped color as well? Where did you that teal color? Is that from a pad. Black and teal. A great combo.

Linda!!!!! You have made my heart glad today, girl! I can see how Amanda has inspired you but I also see how uniquely you these are. These also remind me of my favorite book illustrator when I was a child. I'll have to try once and for all to figure out who that was. Nice to get away from colorworld for a change, eh?

Oh, thank you all, each and every one! Yes, baby sis, I'll do one for you of YOUR town when I finally come visit, how's that!? Diahn -- I didn't really get OUT without you -- these were all done from the car, and finished at home. It would have been more fun with you there! Lindsay and Amanda, I stamped the squares first and then did the drawings with a sepia Micron -- the inkpad is Ancient Page "DEEP Harbor" -- one of my favorite colors for some reason. Amanda! Thanks for dropping by! See, you offer inspiration without knowing it! :-) Laura, you nailed it -- "away from colorworld" -- what a great phrase! (Who knew that all this watercolor practice would get so tiring so quickly?)

Great idea to put the rubber stamp under the drawing.
The whole page is so intriguing.

Wonderful use of the shadow stamp, and I love the teal colour. I love the narrative that's developed by your use of the grid, and even by your expansion out of it. Just delightful.

I think the whole piece is great!

Beautiful, love these little pieces of life. Ummm, is that a phone booth I see there ;D

Thank you all, again! Yes, Janey -- that is a pay phone booth you see there and the other half of the inspiration for the project I was telling you about! It is actually an EMPTY booth -- the phone has been removed. I think that's just WEIRD! :-D You all will know one day what project we're discussing -- just wait and see!
