Don't Walk

Don't Walk ... or Don't Wok, as Angelia thought I said. I'm having the hardest time getting back into the watercolor groove lately. It's all the rain and grey skies that make me paint even a photo of Chinatown in California as if it were dreary. Pooh.

This is the reference photo, given to me by Susan after she realized that if she didn't give me something I was going to drool all over her Chinatown photos and ruin them. It was that row of color that got me and gets me, still. I was a coward, though, and left out all but three of the figures. Maybe next time I'll have more guts. Everything turned out to be much more complex than I thought it would be when I started! And really -- I should have left out the car, I think.

Oh well. That was my Saturday morning. I hope yours has been wonderful!

I applaud the fact that you are willing to tackle subject matter like this. My eyes go crossed and I lose all perspective with such a complex picture. I have every confidence in you though!

Thanks, Steviewren! My eyes are crossed! It is so hard to know how much detail to put in. I can't tell you all how I went dark with detail, then scrubbed it out, then light detail, then scrubbed out ... it went on and on. Thankfully I use 300# paper, so it takes the abuse!

See I would get annal and try to get to complicated so I love the fact you kept it loose.

I really love the looseness of this! Really!!

I think the painting is much more intriguing the way you interpreted it.

Hey, I'm going to Chinatown on Sunday for the the New Year festivities...wanna come? My niece Gracie will be here for a visit and thought she'd enjoy going and hopefully we'll be sketching too! this has a bordering on abstract quality and I really like!

Boy, do I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes it works just the way you want it, but sometimes, not. There's a lot that's right with this, though. I'd just put it down and move on to the next thing. And yes, what were you thinking???It's way too complicated and there's way too little real info about the scene from this photo! ;D

Thank you Laura! I have moved on ... yes I have ...

chin up, the sun should be back soon, making life just that little bit less grey/gray.

Have you fallen off the earth? What happened?

Teri, I'm still here! Alive and well and recovering from a very busy spell!
:-) I guess I've made it my goal for the month of February to refrain from blogging. That wasn't my intent, but if I don't get busy ...
