2005 Review

December 31 and it is time to stop and take a look at the last year, and plan for the next!
Things I've learned this last year:
That quick little sketches can bring back as much memory as more elaborate sketches. I look at this scribble of a ski lift and get chilly!

That the simplest little things around you can be good subject matter, and the closer you look at something, the more you understand it.

That a fast sketch that I don't really like at first
can turn out to be one of my favorites after all.
That if I loosen up a bit and quit worrying so much
about the outcome, it usually turns out okay in the long run.

That if one is going to
read good art instruction books...

it is usually beneficial to also
put some of that instruction into practice
and actually TRY some of the recommended exercises...

and learn, therefore,
that you can add a little orange or purple to make fun greens...

...and that you REALLY can make black
without actually using the color black!

Finally, I've learned, that the key is

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

Thanks so much to all of you who have offered such
wonderful advice and support and encouragement!

Great review, Linda! I love that little floppy dog at the top! What great use of cross-hatching and simplicity - You are an inspiration to me!

And I am going to resolve to draw in public, as well - I drew while sitting in my car today - but that's as close as I have gotten...2006 is THE year!

Very inspiring. I got a rueful chuckle from your writing that in addition to reading art books, one ought to actually put some of their ideas into practise as well! I plead guilty!

I too agree that sometimes of sketches revisited often bring back great memories.

Great cross hatching on the pooch. I also like the loose water color sketch of the boats, well done!

Thank you for visiting and Happy New Years to you too!

great work- especially like the purple next to greens tip. My favourite is the landscape with the bold brushstrokes and the rich colours, it's fantastic.
