Homecoming

Inspired by a recent bout of interior drawings, this week's drawing challenge for the Everyday Matters group is to draw what you see when you first come home. Believe me, I tried several, and found that drawing a room is much harder than it looks! This is the best I could come up with -- the cat sleeping on the back of the sofa in the living room, enjoying the late afternoon light coming in from the opposite window. Other than that, here's an orchid. Not blooming, but an orchid none-the-less.

Drawing a room IS much harder than it looks! And that's why I've made myself do this project this month. But, oh, Linda, I look forward to February ;D. I, knowing what I know, really value your room sketch--I haven't even begun to try to do much in the way of light effects, so I am terribly impressed with what you've done. And, yes, the elegant orchid drawing reminds us that you are a fabulous draughtsman/woman/person. Wonderful, wonderful blog entry.

Yes interiors are tricky things, but I think you did a fine job with this. I like your style. The cat is a nice touch too. And the orchid is SUPERB! Well done!

One question: can I move in with you??!! Just kidding, but your couch and sleeping cat are so cosy looking and I just feel like settling in and snuggling up. Plus your orchid is amazing!! Thanks for sharing.

I do believe the cat did pick the best sleeping couch in your house. I love the orchid. It is wonderful.

The pencil sketch "looks" relaxing... A sweet spot for a sleepy kitty.

Your botanical is superb as usual.

Interiors are filled with excess stimuli. It may be that finding the right nook and worrying over limited details could be the biggest hurdle, at least that's what I've found anyway. So, I mantra to myself as I am taking it all in "just capture the essence"... forget the rest. :) Hope we see more. I love your work. :)

This orchid is gorgeous - such a wonderful botanical drawing. I love the way you've rendered the leaves so gracefully. Just beautiful.

Now this orchid is lovely and is going to be even lovelier when it blooms. What a beautiful drawing.
I am in awe of your talent.

Thanks to you all! Evy, the orchid was done in graphite. I used an HB pencil to lightly outline, 2B for the lighter leaf shading, then switched to 5B for the darker area, the moss, and the pot. I don't have Felicity's patience in building up a wonderful progressive range of tone, sorry to say, and IMpatiently did this one in about 45 minutes. Marie-Dom, I'll be lucky if this one blooms again, but if it does I'll be sure to do a painting of the flowers -- they were a gorgeous tiny chocolate brown bloom and much more exotic than what we normally see around here. I thought I'd already posted a comment thanking everyone else, but it looks like it got lost, so I'll thank all the rest of you in a group -- THANK YOU for all your encouraging comments!
